The Nursing Channel launches Volunteering in Ethiopia

University Health Network prides itself in its vision of achieving global impact. Our nursing staff set exemplars of Global Practice through philanthropic participation within initiatives to bring nursing practice beyond geographic borders. Join UHN nurses Helen and Kwang as they reflect their personal journey in the Myungsung Christian Medical Centre, a 150 bed facility, located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Both UHN nurses share a strong interest and commitment to volunteerism on both professional as well as on humanitarian levels by sharing their nursing practice skills within a global setting.

The overall objective of their two-week volunteer mission was to help establish an Intensive Care Unit in respect to nursing education, practice and documentation. Specific opportunities to share knowledge, skill and practice resulted in enhancing capacity and sustainable infrastructure resources. The overseas experience was both rewarding and humbling as Helen and Kwang each reflect on the impact of adjusting to cultural norms and nursing practices of their host country to enrich their own level of global awareness and professionalism. An opportunity for partial financial support was graciously made available through the UHN Global Practice fund for Nursing.
