The Nursing Channel launches Betty's Story: Learning to Live Without a Voice
When people experience a total laryngectomy, the removal of their voice box, life changes for them in a big way. As they learn to live without their voice they encounter challenges to establishing a fulfilling life that works for them. The relationships these individuals establish with health care professionals contribute significantly to person’s satisfaction with care and quality of life. Throughout Betty’s journey she learns from health care professionals and they learn from her.
While every person experiencing this surgery has a unique experience, Betty’s challenges were compounded by the effects of a brain injury acquired several decades ago in a car accident. The team rises to the occasion by embracing their own vulnerability and caring for Betty in a way that “consciously adopts the patient’s perspective about what matters”.
